We’re two weeks into the new year and already, mandatory gratuity fees are going up.  Holland America sent notices to travel agents and made changes to its website confirming the tip increases for all voyages beginning on or after February 14, 2024. The rate increase will apply to all guests regardless of what type of cabin they are staying in.

Elizabeth has some serious questions for the cruise companies regarding tipping… and this will be a shock, many of the questions are exactly the same being asked of the restaurant/hospitality industries.

Who gets the tip money and how is it distributed?

Are the cruise companies withholding the tips in any way, or does 100% go to crew members?

Since the tipping charges are mandatory, will there be transparency to us (as the customers) as to where our money goes?

Are the cruise companies passing along the tips to the crew members we may have had direct contact with or is the money pooled and distributed?

Is tip money just that, a tip, or are the companies using the money as part of the employee’s compensation?
