The widow of gun entrepreneur William Wirt Winchester, Sarah inherited a portion of the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune upon his passing. As Elizabeth tells the story, you’ll hear about a woman so overwhelmed with guilt, (that the family fortunes was amassed via the loss of so many lives) that she along with a team of architects and builders took what was a small family home, and kept building.
Sara’s former home is now the “Winchester Mystery House” in San Jose, California.
The word “mystery” comes into play because of the very quirky way the house was added onto. Now a museum, you can tour her home, and explore the floorplan that follows no rules.
