Spin around those packages of yogurt, chocolate milk, cottage cheese, ice cream or almond milk and look at the list of ingredients. Somewhere near the middle of the list you’ll likely find the word “carrageenan.”
If you’re not familiar with it, the food industry uses it as thickening agent.
Carrageenan comes from red seaweed, and like a lot of FDA approved additives, it appears that it was allowed into the food supply without adequate testing.
Now, years after being allowed into our foods, there’s limited research that shows carrageenan is a possible carcinogen, suspected of being the culprit in cases of colon cancer. Researchers also believe carrageenan may be responsible for cases of irritable bowel syndrome, inflammation, bloating and glucose intolerance.
Why is this product still allowed on the market?
In 2016, the National Organics Standards Board (NOSB) declared that it would no longer be allowed in organic foods.
So why hasn’t the FDA pulled carrageenan off the market (and out of the food supply) pending further testing?
Elizabeth takes an in-depth look at carrageenan; it’s prevalence in the foods we eat, and makes a case for additional testing.
